Search Mississippi Department of Corrections Releases

To find someone released from Mississippi Department of Corrections custody after a Jefferson Davis County case, use the statewide prison and supervision records rather than the county jail docket alone. MDOC manages sentenced state prisoners, parole, earned-release supervision, and discharge records. No MDOC prison was identified inside Jefferson Davis County. A state transfer from the local jail is continued confinement, not release. The official offender detail, active parolee search, state notification system, local supervision office, and written records process each reveal a different stage of the release path.

MDOC Release Paths

MDOC release can mean parole, earned-release supervision, or final discharge. Parole is conditional release under the State Parole Board framework. Earned-release supervision, often shortened to ERS, also places a person outside prison while MDOC authority continues. Discharge means the sentence or supervision duty has ended. These terms must not be merged.

A person transferred from Jefferson Davis County Jail to an MDOC institution remains confined. Once MDOC authorizes physical release, the person may report to a community-corrections office, including the dedicated Jefferson Davis office when that county supervises the case. A detainer can instead route the person to another agency. The release record must identify which custody ended and whether another authority began.

Confirm an MDOC Release

The official MDOC inmate search accepts a first name, last name, or MDOC ID. Use the ID when possible. With a name, compare birth date, offense, conviction county, and other identifiers. Read current location and unit before the projected date. An institution location means the person remains in the shown MDOC placement.

  1. Search the inmate portal and open the matching detail.
  2. Record the location and exact “Tentative Release Date” label.
  3. Check the separate active parolee search for current parole.
  4. Review SAVIN for a release, transfer, or return-to-custody event.
  5. Request the final MDOC record when the public screens do not establish the historical event.

A tentative date forecasts planning. It is not an executed release. An active parolee match is stronger proof of physical prison departure onto parole, but it does not mean the sentence ended. The Jefferson Davis County release guide explains when to return to county court records.

MDOC Release Record Fields

The public detail can display name, MDOC number, photograph, birth date, physical identifiers, entry date, current location and unit, location-change date, sentence count, total term, offense, conviction county, sentence date, and Tentative Release Date. A blank field or no result is ambiguous. MDOC does not promise that every fully discharged former inmate remains publicly searchable.

MDOC fieldHow to read it
Location and unitCurrent state placement, not county of conviction
Tentative Release DateA forecast that can change
Supervising countyCommunity supervision assignment
Flat Time DateSentence endpoint, not prison exit date

The active parolee search may show supervising county and officer when populated. A parolee no-result may reflect expired parole, another supervision type, or a changed record. It cannot prove that no release occurred.

MDOC Release Records Contact

MDOC Records handles offender time, jail credit, eligibility, and release or discharge questions. Telephone contact can help with routing, but the department states that public-record requests must be written. Use the published request page or GovQA portal and identify the person precisely.

Ask for the final release or discharge date, legal authority, time sheet or summary, eligible jail credit, parole or ERS start, flat-time or maximum discharge date, and discharge certificate if releasable. MDOC lists mechanical copies at $0.15 per page and may charge qualified staff time beyond the first hour, mailing, vendors, and advance payment. Those are state fees, not county sheriff fees.

MDOC Tentative Release Clock

MDOC computes sentence terms, parole dates, ERS dates, tentative release or discharge dates, and maximum dates. Eligible pre-sentence jail credit must relate to the cause and fall within the relevant period. The county of conviction supplies jail time. Consecutive terms, amended orders, forfeited credit, detainers, and violations can change the result.

Miss. Code § 47-5-138 allows qualifying cases an earned-time rate of 4.5 days for each 30 days served, with a general ceiling of 15 percent. This creates the common 85-percent shorthand. It is not universal. Section 47-5-139 and the handbook identify exclusions and restrictions. Parole eligibility follows a separate clock, and eligibility does not itself grant release.

Note: Never apply the MDOC earned-time shorthand to a local jail term without direct legal authority.

Jefferson Davis MDOC Supervision

Jefferson Davis County has a community-corrections office, not a state prison. Use that office after the parolee search identifies Jefferson Davis as the supervising county or a court or MDOC record assigns the case there. Staff can route a request for public status or the correct office. Field-officer case notes are not a general public record.

SAVIN may report transfer, temporary movement, release, escape or abscond supervision, and return to custody. A transfer notice can carry registration into MDOC or other custody. That feature is useful at the county-to-state boundary. Always read the reporting agency and exact event, then confirm a significant release claim with MDOC Records or the supervising office.

MDOC Facilities Outside Jefferson Davis

No MDOC institution or regional prison was identified inside Jefferson Davis County. A Jefferson Davis conviction does not predict the prison location. MDOC can place a sentenced person elsewhere in Mississippi, and the conviction-county field is not a location field. Use the statewide locator for current placement.

The county sheriff cannot certify a later state discharge. Conversely, MDOC does not establish whether a local detainee bonded out before state commitment. Keep the custody systems separate and obtain the record from the agency that held the person at the event in question.

Resolve MDOC Release Conflicts

Release dates can differ without either record being false. A court may sign an amended sentencing order, MDOC may post eligible jail credit later, and SAVIN may send its event after the physical change. A tentative date can move because of credit, forfeiture, consecutive terms, a detainer, parole action, or a violation. Preserve the source, label, and retrieval date for each value.

Do not recalculate an MDOC date from sentence length alone. Obtain the sentencing and amended orders, determine whether terms run together or one after another, verify county jail credit, and request the MDOC time sheet or summary. The department's computation controls its own record unless a court or later agency action changes it. A screenshot of an older tentative date proves only what was projected on that day.

If MDOC shows an institution while Jefferson Davis County says the person was released, the county event likely was a transfer into state custody. If the inmate search returns nothing, check the parolee portal, SAVIN, court record, and MDOC Records. Silence is not a discharge. Identity must also be matched through the MDOC number, full birth date, conviction county, and sentence facts before records are combined.

MDOC Release Notifications

Mississippi SAVIN uses electronic records supplied by reporting agencies. MDOC says notices can cover transfer or temporary movement, return to custody, escape or abscond supervision, and release. Multiple changes can generate multiple alerts. Read the exact event and source agency before deciding what happened.

The Registration Link can follow a county offender record into MDOC or “other custody” after a felony transfer. That feature is useful for Jefferson Davis County because a person may leave the local jail for state prison. The county departure and MDOC arrival are linked custody events, not a community release. A later MDOC release notice concerns a different stage.

Registration may be anonymous through the general SAVIN route. The separate restricted victim-services form is for direct victims, homicide survivors, or witnesses and should not be used by someone outside those categories. For help, the MS SAVIN office lists 601-359-5759 during business hours and 1-888-9-MSSAVIN at all hours in English or Spanish. TTY help is available at 866-847-1298.

A SAVIN alert is timely corroboration, not a certified release order. Data-entry time can differ from physical exit. Confirm a significant event with MDOC Records, the supervising office, or the court. Save the reporting agency and exact wording. If the alert reports return to custody or abscond supervision, do not describe the person as simply released.

Check MDOC County Coverage

When Jefferson Davis County is absent from the live SAVIN facility selector, do not assume county coverage. The sheriff and court remain the local sources. MDOC coverage begins when the state system actually receives or supervises the person, and the statewide record should name the relevant status.
